On the podcast today is Jonny Cruz. This was the perfect time to talk to Jonny, because he’s plop in the middle of an inflection point in his life. For most of his adult life, he’s been a professional actor, you might have seen him as Ricky in Robert Rodriguez’s show Matador. But then, earlier this year, he started working at Facebook Live as a producer and at Instagram, directing boomerangs for A-list celebrities and shooting stories for the Instagram account, which has 200 million followers. At the same time, he blew up in voice over, because he’s the voice of Lucio in the ultra-popular game Overwatch, which I’m told some 20 million people play. In fact, you probably saw him last week in the video that went viral of him talking in character to all the other Overwatch VO actors.

Jonny, from childhood, had the dream of being a big-time actor; that was the focus, and that was his identity into adulthood. And now he makes a pivot, and ... he’s incredibly happy and fulfilled. The narrative when it comes to career seems to be, you set a goal, and then you go at it and never give up, because giving up is failure. And Jonny’s experience, at least in this moment, goes against that narrative. And you better believe we dig into exactly how he thinks about all of this. And then in the second half of the episode, we get into how both Jonny and Igor think about our relationship with women, which at one point leads to Igor apologizing to his ex-girlfriends. Exciting stuff!

Remember if you ever have a thought or a reaction to an episode and want to share, feel free to email howareyouthinkingabout@gmail.com. And as always, it’s a boost to the podcast if you leave an iTunes review.

Award-winning Chicano-content focused Director Marvin Lemus comes on and gets nasty talking about both the guilt and the drive that comes from being an immigrant (or 2nd generation) and working in a creative field. We also talk about dealing with anxiety, activism, identity, YouTube, creating meaningful work, self-talk, love, and, you guessed it, more.

Marvin is an extremely talented filmmaker and a long-time friend and close collaborator with Igor. They worked together making sketches with their group, The Kids Table (http://www.youtube.com/thekidstablecomedy), as well as creating all the online promotional videos for the Lionsgate film, "Dear White People" (directed by podcast guest Justin Simien).

Marvin is currently in post-production on his Web Series, Gente-fied, which is Executive Produced by America Ferrera.

Thank you for listening. Saw this great quote from Salvador Dali today: "...I very early realized, instinctively, my life formula: to get others to accept as natural the excesses of one's personality and thus to relieve oneself of his own anxieties by creating a sort of collective participation."

On the podcast today is Nicholas Kraft, who Produced and Edited the fantastic documentary Pursuing Happiness, and is currently employee #1 and Director of Audience Development at the List app, a social network built around the creating and sharing of lists, and co-founded by BJ Novak. I had the privilege of watching Pursuing Happiness, where their goal was to find the happiest people in America, and oh man I liked it so much. Among many things, it made me realize that I need to step it up and actively care more for the people around me. Being nice is one thing, but I can stand to do more to make life easier for other people.  And I have played around with the List app, and I like that, too. It’s amazing how poignant or interesting or informative a simple list can be. Plus John Mayer and Lena Dunham use it all the time. Download it in the app store if you don’t have it yet.

If you’re interested in seeing the doc, head over to PursuingHappiness.com, where you can see the trailer now, and though it won’t be available on demand for a couple months, there’s a contact page, and if you give them a shout and say you heard Nicky K on How Are you Thinking About, I don’t know, no promises, but you may find yourself watching the movie sooner than you think.

On the podcast today is rapper Young Twaun. Originally from Detroit, Twaun has opened for the likes of Rick Ross, Meek Mill, Wale, 2 Short and many others. His new single is called “Let It Marinate”, which you can hear on Spotify now.

I met Twaun when I decided to run an experiment and see how quickly I could emotionally connect with a stranger, and of course the first person I meet, we're onto God within a minute, and then they end up on my podcast. As you’ll hear, Twaun is an incredibly open-hearted, loving, warm, and focused person, and I really enjoyed his thoughts and perspective, especially when it came to God.

On the podcast today is writer Zed Cutsinger. He has a show in the works with his comedy partner Andrew Micahan at Super Deluxe, writes for the sketch team Bombardier at the Upright Citizens Brigade, and he co-hosts the film-review podcast: “Views from the Vista.”

As you’ll quickly tell, Zed is extremely thoughtful and intelligent, and in many ways this episode is a great example of the premise of the show, because we go way in depth into how Zed thinks about the daily stuff of life, from why he doesn’t trust gut reactions to thinking critically about why he likes the things he likes, and why it's so important to ask "why?" This is a very heady episode, which is awesome, and I hope you’ll listen with an open mind, because Zed does a good job of challenging some of our generally accepted beliefs.

Remember, if you’ve been enjoying the podcast so far, share an episode with a friend and tell them to check it out. It’s an easy way to help the podcast grow.

It's part 2 with TIME Magazine columnist Joel Stein, and we do not hold back. Some quotes from this episode:

"I get very excited when someone has a fetish I don’t have because I feel superior."

"When I hear alcoholics talk about their first drink, I know the intensity when I first saw my first porn magazine. And the self-hatred, and it was so shameful and so intense. It was so big, that feeling, that I wasn’t able to contain it in any vessel in my body. It was super super and still is very intense."

"I listen to healthy men talk about watching porn, and it’s a tool to have an orgasm. To me, masturbation is a tool to watch porn."

"Relationships get established really early. Like you establish a pattern within weeks that lasts for decades."

"A marriage or a relationship is a million tiny acts of bravery, and [Joel's wife Cassandra] was really good at being brave in the moment and bringing the thing up, like when she’s hurt. I really admire that. It’s really hard."

"I need someone to ask me five times before I tell them how I feel, and then I’m mad if they don’t notice."

Thank you for listening. My favorite palindrome is "A man, a plan, a canal: Panama"

Jul 27, 2016

Here is part one of my fantastic conversation with TIME Magazine columnist Joel Stein! Topics discussed:

  • Social anxiety as an extrovert
  • Wanting to be liked
  • Mid-life crisis
  • The freedom of not needing your work to outlive you
  • Raising a child and what one learns about human growth
  • Why my plan for Instagram success will fail

Some quotes from this episode:

“I’m embarrassed not to have herpes.”

“When I’m a dick, I think it’s likable?”

“I exceeded my dreams in my 20’s and coasted ever since.”

(On striving for immortality through your work): “See a therapist…that’s ego narcissism; that’s craziness. If you’re the President of the United States, odds are in 30 years no one will be able to name you.

“Parenting is so reactive. I thought it would be so proactive, but it’s basically just triage all the time.”

“[Having a kid] didn’t ruin my life like people told me it would.”

"I just know men are horrible."

Joel will be back next week with part 2 of our conversation, where things get only more intense, and more sexual.

On the podcast this week is digital ad man/writer/podcast producer/editor/improviser Stephen Perlstein. It's a very interesting conversation in that we dig deep into four topics that keep feeding into and relating with each other:

- Long distance running

- Going for it/Just starting

- Being opinionated

- Kindness

Some quotes from this episode:

"I didn't ask a lot of people how to start a website. I just started a fucking website."

"You have to keep doing the stuff that you believe is good or worth doing."

"We're mostly lucky."

"I'm very willing to have people not be friends with me." (on being opinionated)

Gay Icon/Writer/Actress/Internet Celebrity Gaby Dunn (Just Between Us, Buzzfeed, Thought Catalog, Fusion, Cosmopolitan) is on the show! Some quotes from the episode:

7:00 “Allison and I have half a million dollars riding on our friendship.”

9:05 “I was kind of a dirt bag before I met Allison.”

27:58 "On being interested in Marc Maron: “His name is Marc, my father’s name is Marc. It’s spelled the same way. He’s a recovering addict. My Dad’s a recovering addict.”

29:50 "You should have sex with famous people. Just don't get emotionally involved."

33:00 “If a famous man turns out to be bad he raped 30 people, if a famous woman turns out to be bad she was rude to you on twitter one time.”

40:40 “It’s never gonna to be perfect. So just do it.”

42:45 “You need to have stuff to show for yourself. You need to be like, this is what I’m doing. This is my thing.”

59:20 "If you look like me, you’re not fat."

1:02:40 "There are a lot of YouTubers that don’t take a stance on anything and I find that very boring. Black Lives Matter shit is going on and they’re tweeting about their cinnamon challenge video. I understand that that’s your brand and your thing is not to be controversial at all, but fuck you."

1:32:25 On non-monogamy: "People don’t extend other people the same complexity they extend themselves. So they’re like, I could love my girlfriend and sleep with someone else, but there’s no way she could do that."

1:48:35 "OK I’ll never work at Buzzfeed again. OK whatever, there are 400 other sites."

2:05:40 On Allison: "She’s a puppet master. She has more control over all of us than we will ever know."

Justin Simien, Writer/Director of the award-winning film “Dear White People” is on the podcast today and refuses to stop dropping wisdom. Couple quotes from the ep:

16:30 "People say things like ‘Movies can’t change the world’ and I think that’s bullshit."

18:15 "It takes a person who doesn’t get to see themselves in a culture, it takes a person that much longer to realize that they’re a valid person and that who they are matters. And think about all those opportunities that they miss out on because something subtle is telling them they don’t belong in the culture. "

32:00 - On when he realized he had depression: “I’m a writer/director, my movie is a hit at Sundance, I have a wonderful loving boyfriend, and wow, I have financial stability. Why can’t I get out of bed still?”

46:30 - "We’re not afraid we’re going to fail, we’re afraid we’ll be great"

1:12:00 - “This idea of ‘falling in love’ and finding the ‘perfect person’ for you is ruining everybody’s lives.”

1:56:10 - "At a certain point, you have to honor the days when you just can’t get anything out. You have to be OK with those days, too. Because if you beat yourself up for sitting down for two hours and getting nothing done you might not show up the next day cause you’re afraid that’s gonna happen again. Writing is really about honoring the time as opposed to honoring the output. And if we can find a way to just sit down every day no matter what, our output is going to be tremendous."

And so much more. Thanks so much to Justin for taking the time. Socials:
